That Last Article Touched a Nerve
I’ve been thinking about this article for two years and working on it for the past six months. The piece came together when I found the idea that CGI Princess Leia was a good explanation for how my brain thinks about video conferences. Yeah, we’re all here, but something is… missing.

The reaction to this article was vastly more interesting than the piece. There are two populations who responded:
Population #1) This piece helped me understand a thing I could sense, but could not explain. Thank you.
Population #2) You are the devil.
Every single bit of critical feedback from Population #2 ignored the three disclaimers I carefully placed at the beginning of the piece which I will summarize thusly, “Distributed work works.” Nope, you can either FOR or AGAINST distributed work and you, sir, are clearly AGAINST.
Sigh.
I’m delighted that distributed work is working well for so many people. Guess what? There’s more coming so we better adapt. However, there are critical use cases for in-person work that have approximated for the past two years and will return. And they’ll co-exist healthily with critical distributed use cases.
See. It’s both.
Happy February.
