I asked ChatGPT to summarize my most recent article. It wrote:
The author is drinking wine on their deck at night when they come up with an idea for a science fiction story. They then discuss their fascination with AI and how it has affected their search behavior. They also talk about the concept of truth and how it relates to AI and critical thinking. Lastly, they share a personal story about their love of the color orange and how it took some self-reflection to understand why they like it.
This is a sterile but not untrue summary of the piece. However, if you’re reading this mail, you signed up for the Rands newsletter, which means you will likely read the article.
My question: does this summary describe what this article is about?
It is a deliberately odd article. I intentionally wrote it that way. It’s got a typical Rands story open. There’s no obvious segue to the middle section, but it’s there. The closing is another seemingly unrelated story, but — by now — I hope it’s clear that it is very related.
I suspect we will spend a lot of time over the next couple of years debating what it means to be human. What defines a work to be built by humans versus robots? I’ll open by suggesting one idea; it’s not about what we write, but what we write between the lines.
